Clair
has been sewing for over 37 years. She stands almost five feet, twelve
inches tall. Because of her height at a very young adolescent age, and
because not many tall size clothes were sold in the ready-made market
thirty years ago, she made the majority of her own clothes.
When she bought her first house,
in 1965, she couldn't wait to make all the drapery. She had no instructions,
just knew she wanted them very full. The first pair of drapery she made
hung 1 1 years in her Catonsville, Maryland home, and another 9 years
in her Pasadena, Maryland home.
Friends and relatives started asking
her to make them drapery that looked and hung like hers. One thing
led to another.
Today, she has a drapery and interior
business in Anne Arundel County Maryland; Decor by Dobry" with
her own workroom. She sells everything for windows and walls. Because
of her "Quality Decorating at it's Best, but for Less!" motto,
she has a constant and ever growing business. She also works with sheets
and her customers' own fabrics, and recycles old drapery into lovely
window fashions.
Clair's first book, MAKE CUSTOM
DRAPERY,, Yes You Can!, was published in 1982. Her second book MAKE
CLOUD SHADES,... was published in March'85, and in August'86, MAKE SWAGS
& JABOTS. Early'89 will produce her "NO-SEW" DRAPERY.,
Yes You Can! book. Booklets on Pillowcase Drapery, Hourglass & Diamond
Drapery and Bishop Sleeve Drapery are also available. These books are
sold in fabric and book stores across the United States and Canada.
Clair instructs all phases of drapery
making; Basic [pinch, box, & roll pleats], Intermediate [cloud,
balloon, Austrian & Roman blinds] and Advance classes [swags, jabots,
cascades & padded top treatments.] She writes for two magazines,
also does idea seminars. Has done "Decorate With Sheets" shows
for Macy's Department Stores and has appeared on TV Talk Shows.
She enjoys creating and cannot
wait to sew a bolt of fabric into drapery, to see how it will look and
hang. Claira loves what she does and does not consider it work. JUST
FUN!
